On my Super A there is foreward and back play on the left front wheel. The pin that holds the extension on the main axle is worn, but not enough to warrent the amount of play that I have. The wheel sets back about 5 degrees from perpendicular. Is this normal, or is there another fix I can look at?

Alan: Gene has it for you, take a look at your pins also, they can get worn a bit. Someone has run the tractor with those clamps loose and it doesn't take very long until you get wear. Check also the bolts on the clamps, they are suposed to be fine thread. I suspect they are also grade 8 bolt. I will check mine tomorrow in daylight if they are not grade 8 bolts I will post back. I know two of mine at least are original bolts. Don't be afraid to tighten them, I always use 3/4 drive sockets with 30" handle.

Simple fix your holes in the axle are elongated they can be welded up so the spindles are straight.

Thank you very much gene. I'll take it apart and see what I have.

The tractor will drive a lot better if it has a slight forward inclination (positive caster-The bottom of the spindle is slightly forward of the top. I have an A for the past 39 years and every once in awhile, I will hit a hole wrong and, even though it is tight the wheel will pick up the negative caster. I simply put a chain at the bottom and GENTLY bump it back forward. It does not show any wear at the holes either, but it doesn't take much. For the past ten years at least I have apparently been more careful since I haven't had to pull it back into place.

If moving the spindle forward steers better as you say why did I-H move them back for better steering on MARCH 26,1940 starting with serial number 19066?
