We have a chance at buying a '98 Case IH MX 170, with 1,800 hours on it. They brought it out for us to try, and there are no majour flaws. It has 18 suitcase weights on the front that we will sell back to them, because we are going to put a loader on it, and won't work with them on. It needs side mirrors, and quick tach on back is for catagory 3 and need to be traded for 2, it has front wheel assist, but needs back axels cut so we can feed with it. One blinker is bad and is hard shifting, i don't know if it is normal or just an adjustmant. I think it may be around 45,000, but dealer won't say yet til monday, and want to know your advise.

I was at a CaseIH tractor clinic this winter. It seemed to me that the caseIH rep was bragging more about the MX maxxum than the new MXM series. The 150 and the 170 have the magnum rear end in them and are built for much more horsepower than the 170 will ever put out. I have owned a mx120 the past 5 years and I am very happy with it. As far as modifying it, thats up to you, your paying for it. goodluck.

Bryce using the term mod was a poor choice of words. In no way did I mean modifying the tractor. Mod is a term used for product upgrade programs that were put out by CASE/IH. The MX150 & 170 had three pup programs or mods out. One was the intermediate range shaft upgrade, 1st range driven gear upgrade, installing screened fitting in the shuttle valve. Sorry for the confusion.

If u plan on keeping the tractor along time then i guess u can do what u want. But if u cut them axles and decide u dont want this tractor anymore, u will have a tough time selling it.Duels are an absolute "must" for most row crop farmers.I suppose u could run a snap on duel.Just a little something to think about.

The MX170 is a great tractor. Units with 5000 hrs are priced at 38,000. Check to see if it has extended warranty on it. It can have 5 years or 5000 hrs. warranty. Also have the dealer run the serial number to see if it has had all the up mod programs. If the dealer will not help you send me the serial number and I will run it for you and give you some history on the unit. The hard shifting could be the lockout cable needs to be adjusted. Not to worry.
