Well, the brakes on my trailer were working fine last week.Loaded up my old M to go to a show last weekend, and guess what, when I hit the brakes, the trailer brakes locked up tight.Thank God I was still in the driveway when it happened and not on the road.I have gone through the wiring and the brakes themselves, all appears to be good, but I did do some maitence while I had the brakes apart. No change!Ya think my controller is shot?Recommendations on a new one? Thanks!

This might seem obvious, but do you have a battery break-away switch on your trailer. Could it have been activated?

I had an episode of the brakes wanting to lock up on my 30 ft. travel trailer when exiting the campground last Oct. Within a half mile from camping spot I was on the side of the road with the rear axle tires pointing about 15 degrees outward. I have been told that brakes cannot bend the axles/spindles, but mine were bent at the spindle. A new heavier axle was my remedy. My controller was 5 months old and I still have it. My axle was a 1990 model w/ probably less than 10-12k miles on it. My .02 worth...Hoppy is the brand of controller...made by Tekonsha I believe.

I definately would be looking at a new controller, there has been some discussion on which brand is best in recent days on these forums, you might search back a few days and research the topic. The discussion was on either this forum, or tractor talk.

In addition to our old tractor hobby, we have an RV (fifth wheel) and I read alot of the RV boards. One of the newest, and people swear it is the best, brake controler is the "Prodigy" by technonsha (sp?). I dont currently have one on my truck but will get one when we change trucks next year. They are a bit pricey at $110 to $130 but everyone I know who has one swears by them and all the comments I read on them are good.

Just curious, could you fill me in on which web sites you are using for the R.V. info?
I think most of us could benefit from learning all we can about brake controllers.
When you are hauling a 7,000# tractor and encounter 6 miles of 7% grade, you quickly realize just how important good brakes are!
