Idle on a C

I picked up a C at a sale Saturday. A real neat little tractor. It runs real good but wants to surge up and down when it idle's. The gas in it was real old smelling but it starts real easy. It has to be choked a little even if it's warmed up. I'm sure I need to clean the carb. Is this a problem with the governor? It seems to like to run best at full throttle and likes to die if idled very low. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks Al

Had the same problem when I bought my C. Replaced the governor spring and took care of the problem.
If fresh fuel doesn't help, search the YT forum archives for 'governor' and you will find many many postings about adjusting/repairing governors.

I had '49 C that did the same thing. Start with the fuel, get some new fuel in it. If it still does it take the carb off and check out. The butterfly shaft in the carb on my C was all wore out and it was sucking air making it surge at idle. I put a new carb on it and it never did it again.

Drain that old fuel out first and see how it runs. Drain the carb out too, fill with new fuel and see what it runs like then. If no better, check carb and screens (in carb inlet, and fuel bowl for debris).
