I have the opportunity to buy a Farmall 140 in pretty fair shape with a front grader blade for less than $1800. The serial number is 62472 and I can't seem to find a match in the serial number section to the left on this site. The tractor is located in E. Tennessee. It doesn't smoke on start up or after running for about five minutes. The steering is pretty tight and I ran it thru all four gears and there is no noise in any gear. The right brake pedal is all the way down and doesn't want to come back up, but the brake isn't dragging. The left brake seems normal. The hydraulics seem to work smoothly, except for a slight hitch in letting down the front blade (air in lines?). The sheet metal is fair (no emblems at all) and it needs paint everywhere (existing paint has turned pink). What do y'all think?

Bama,

I totally agree with Hugh. But, you didn't mention implements. Depending on what you plan to do with it, it may be worth your time to look for one with implements already with it. Oh, you'll get enjoyment for a while just listening to it run and riding it around the homeplace, but sooner of later you're gonna want to let it do what it's supposed to do. Finding cultivators and/or buying or fabricating plows, discs, mowers etc might add up more quickly than you realize.

Welcome to the family.

Mitch

On the serial number section for 140 you have to look in section called International and Farmall and not just Farmall. These are a good little tractor. I'm rebuilding one right now. I don't like working on the 140 as well as the older Super A or even the 130. IH may call it improvments, I call it bloody knuckles.

Seriously though these little tractors are still quite reasonable to rebuild. For the guy who has yard work, a garden, grass to mow and snow to plow. A lot of them haven't been that well taken care of. You'll probably spend a $1,000. to put it in top shape. After that you'll have a lot of years where you don't spend a $100. on repairs.
