I posted a message requesting information on a IH tractor I bought. K.B. felt it was a 606 but asked me to post a photo. It took a while but it is posted on the "help identify" page. I can't find much information on the 606. How reliable it is etc. If any of you can point me in the right direction I would be thankful.

Bill, that definetly appears to be a 606. Actually, from the looks of the grill, it appears to be a 2606. 2606 was the Industrial version of the 606. IH made alot of Industrial models based on farm tractors, and signified it by putting a "2" in front of the model number. There was the 2606, 2706, 2806, 21206, 2656, 2756, 2856, 21256, 21456, 2826, 21026, ect. (based on the 606, 706, 806, 1206, 656, 756, 856, 1256, 1456, 826, and 1026). I don't know too much about Industrial models, but I know some of them had foot throttles and no PTO.

K.B. This tractor has a pto, three point hitch and no foot throttle. Some parts of the main frame has red paint under the yellow. I don't know if some city just painted it yellow, or if it was easier for IH to paint everything red, and then put yellow paint on the "special orders". The tin doesn't have any red under the yellow.

I don't know about that paint, either. Could be that IH painted yellow over red like you say, but I really have no idea. The biggest clue that yours is an Industrial model is that the headlights are in the grill. I've seen other IH Industrial tractors with that same setup. The few 606 Utility (non-Industrial) tractors I've seen have the same grill as 404, 504, 706 and early 656 Row-Crop tractors, and had the headlights to the side of the grill. The cut of the sheetmetal and clamshell fenders on your tractor definetly mean it is a 06 series, if it has a D-236 six-cylinder glow-plug start diesel engine and a 5-speed transmission, then there is no doubt that it is a 606 or 2606. 606 was a good tractor, but with those old glow-plug diesels, you need to have the batteries, battery cables, and glow plugs in exellent condition. You need to use the glow plugs even in the warmest weather, on a 70-degree day give them at least 30 seconds if not more. on a cold day you may need to give them 2 minutes. That's just the way they are.

I had noticed that in all the books I looked in that the head lamps were on the "out side", unlike mine. The thing cranks well. About a 20 count on the glowplugs will start it, but if I hold it down for another 30 count while it's running, it will stop smoking. I live in Florida, so at least I don't have to deal with trying to start it in sub-zero weather. I'm running the original fuel, which was farm grade diesel (I figure that's why it smokes so much in the beginning). I plan on running regular diesel simply becouse it's easier to get. I changed the hytran fluid and oil with all the filters, but since I still haven't recieved the manuals I ordered, I didn't know if it had any screens that needed cleaning. My Uncle had around 600 aceres and my brother in law was a hay farmer, but this is my first tractor. It's going to be fun to learn about it. Next toy will be a box blade. Thanks again for the info.

Sounds like you're doing just fine. Your tractor is probably in good mechanical shape since it starts that well. Smoking after start-up is common with these engines, and holding the glow plugs on until it clears up like you are doing is exactly what you should do. The only real difference between farm fuel and on-highway fuel is that farm fuel is tax-exempt and it has a red dye in it to identify it. Get caught with red fuel in your diesel-powered pickup and your're in big trouble! You are right, though, for one tractor it isn't worth the trouble of getting farm fuel. Was there a screen around the outside of the hydraulic filter? Your 606/2606 probably has the same hydraulic system as a 460, which would be about the same as my 240, mine has a screen around the filter, but some guys say their 240's don't have a screen around the filter.

I couldn't find a hydrolic filter. I wanted to change the fluids becouse I think the previous owner put regular transmission fluid in it and not hytran fluid. Since my manuals haven't come in yet, I figured I would rather have the correct fluid and change the hydrolic filter later. I also not sure where the fluid level check bolt is. Life will get easier when those manuals get in.

did you look at the serial tag? (does it still have one?)
i don't think it's a 606
there were many utility/industrial models from around the same time period that were available.
hopefully someone with more knowledge can jump in here!

606 wasnt a big seller but it was a good tractor, it amounts to a late model 460 Utility with much better power steering and 3 point hitch.
