I just got my "free" farmall 400 home, It's in real nice shape, tin and all,(3100hrs),,,,the guy I got it from is reliable, said the T.A. worked when he parked it two years ago. However the engine is stuck, I didnt dare try freeing it by pulling it, letting the clutch out. Suppose I'll have to pull the head off? Also any ideas as to how to retrieve the serial number off a worn I.D plate? ,,,,, Thanks for any info,, Bernsy

Take the starter off use the right size pry bar on the starter ring gear becarful not to break the teeth and try to move it back and forth keep soaking the pistons through the plug holes worked for me.

I have had good luck using a penetrating oil called SILIKROIL. I purchased a MD that sat for thirteen years, poured silikroil in the cylinders and had it loose, with no rough spots in the sleeves, in two days. You can go to www.kanolabs.com to get it.

Bernsy: forget the wd-40! that stuff is worthless. use PB BLASTER nut buster. this stuff will out work wd-40 10 to 1, if it can be freed up, this will do it. I have loosened several stuck engines with this stuff. if you have already sprayed wd-40, take an air hose with a thin tube and blow it out then spray blaster.

I got a 1962 David Brown last year that had been sitting in the open for about 5 years and was locked solid.

I took the injectors (diesel) out and put a thin rod in to see if the cylinders were dry. One had about an inch of rainwater water in that had seeped in through an open exhaust valve.

I sucked out the water and poured WD40 and diesel into all the cylinders and left it. After a few weeks of applying slight pressure to the crankshaft nut it moved almost a full revolution but was stopping against a ridge of crud on the cylinder wall. I then used the starter to turn it over and it blew past the ridge immediately. The engine ran sweetly after that. I sold the DB a few weeks ago as the clutch was starting to slip, and am now the happy owner of a 1979 IH484 that I'm gradually smartening up and using to finish mow 5 acres of paddock.

One little suggestion if you try this method of freeing up the engine - at first try to turn the crank backwards as this way you're not trying to push against any crud that's built up on the cylinder wall. It may get things moving quicker.

If you turn the engine in the opposit dirrection of normal operation it would reverse the direction of travel of the pistons. However if they were headed down they would now be headed up.So the theory is 50/50.

Bernsy,

You might try taking a piece of paper and a pencil, put the paper over the tag and shade the area over the tag with the side of the pencil lead and see if the number appears.

Worth a Try!
