Iam having trouble timming my H.I have installed the mag and set it the way the book said. However its says to have the top of the mag closest to the block and than rotate the engine 1 turn to the next tdc and than pull the top of the mag away from he block and the impluse should click.I can not get this to happen.I have tried it many times.Could the mag to govenor gears be off.The tractor wont start.I purchased this tractor and the person had rebuilt the motor but never had it running afterwards so I dont know where Iam at.

When you get the engine on TDC you have to rotate the drive of the magneto backwards to line up with the drive coupling. Do this with the magneto distributor cap off and turn it backwards by holding the rotor. this will put it on the pre impulse side so the next time around it will be ready to snap at TDC. This should work as long as the magneto is in good shape.

If that is the case of firing late how much do you have to turn the crank to get impulse tripping. The gear must be off a couple of teeth. If you are sure #1 is on compression and not exhaust stroke you will have to turn the gear backwards a couple of teeth until #1 is in proper position to fire at TDC.

Make sure you have TDC on the compression stroke. Then point the rotor at #1 position and follow the procedure. Most often someone is 180 deg out. Good luck Geoff

Geoff: I did that several times.I felt #1 come up on compression watched the valves and lined up the marks But I can not get the impluse to trip like it says.It seems like it trips after it goes by # 1

You can pull the cover off that exposes the mag gears, and try moving one notch at a time. I did this on an H and forgot where I was, the gears were not marked, like to never got it started after that -- Just be sure you have a reference point. I suppose the impulse coupling could be bad, also.

you can pull the housing and advance the gear a tooth or two if you are sure this is what you want.
