So what gives with the starter in my '56 300U, I have replaced the Bendix at least four times in the last three years and this tractor is not used all that often. It starts very easy and is not being ground on. It's a six volt starter being fed Twelve but I'm doing the same thing with a Case and an Oliver and have had no starter trouble in ten years. I'm now going to replace the entire starter, anyone know of a 12 volt unit that will fit, or should I be Ok with another NEW 6 volt ? Thanks...Boomer

OK,...so this is what I figure is causing the bendix problem and will just add it to this post incase someone else is having the same. The live PTO on the IH 300 U is lightly draging, so even though the PTO is disingaged on starting the tractor, if a brushhog, chipper or baler is installed the starter is trying to turn over the implement and putting an extra load on the bendix! I thought about this when I noticed the starters were going out only when I needed the tractor most (when I was USING a PTO implement) So I will try again to adjust the PTO or repair if needed and hope that should end the problem...Thanks, Boomer

Boomer: Sounds to me as though you are using the old type bendix or starter drive You put one of the new clutch starter drives in there it should solve most problems. It however will not heal a bruised up flywheel ring gear.

Sounds like the flywheel gear is worn out.

Some folks claim that 12 volts through a 6 volt starter will kill the bendex more quickly. I have converted 2 tractors to 12 volt, a JD 430 and IH SMTA. I have had no trouble with the bendix on either. Both start very quickly. What goes out on the bendix? Could the flywheel ring be worn badly? On my SMTA I had trouble with the windings in the starter at first, just that the end broke off. I took it to a guy who rebuilds starters and he put 12 volt windings in it. Believe they were same as in a Chevy. Don't know if that has made a difference or not. Suspect you could get you 6 volt starter rebuilt to 12 volts unless you want to keep it for the correct police. My tractor's are workers so I don't worry about that.

Thanks fellas, The bendix just falls apart, like it just hammers itself to death at the end of its stroke.Breaks the springs, eats the washers and knocks the end ring that holds it all together off the shaft, but the gear looks great. Maybe I'm buying a real cheap (crappy) mail order Bendix and if I buy a rebuilt starter from the same company it may come rebuilt with the same poor quality parts. Perhaps I need to get a better quality from the IH dealer, just wish he was'nt so dang far away!

Find a one horse starter shop where you can show the guy who builds them your problem. As a small business specialty he should be the best help you can find.
