When reinstalling shims, such as belt pulley housing to PTO housing, do they go back dry or with a coating of oil? Since I am a novice I have no idea. What keeps them from leaking oil if they are not sealed with Permatex or Indian Head?

Brad, I have had trouble with those shimmed flanges leaking. I have asked the same question you asked before on this forum and never got a good answer as to that they did from the factory. Lately, I have been coating the shims with a very thin coating of non hardening Permatex and I haven't had any leaks. Roger

Brad: I can see where you ar coming from. I somehow doubt the manufacturer expected this equipment to be around this long. The shims have to be very clean, and no, nothing was used on them. It would defeat the purpose of a shim, some of those are very thin.

I would clean surfaces very well and assemble. If you have any leaks go over the outside with gasket black. I once did this on a crack in oil pan of 6.2 Chevy diesel as a temporary measure. 5 years and 100,000 miles later it had never leaked and was still running every day.
