Well I got the W-9 that I bought last week running after I cleaned the fuel system. Lots and lots of varnish.

Tractor really runs sweet with ONE exception and that is that it runs on and then diesels backwards when you shut it off. Other than cleaning the carb and fuel tank and strainer I haven't done anything else to it.

I don't know what could be the problem except if it was out of time. The only problem with that thought is that it runs so sweet at all speeds and all gears, the govenor is working as good as could be. I will be getting out the timing light tomorrow to check.

If you have any ideas please share them with me.

Try letting it idle for a minute before you shut it down, and make sure the choke is fully open. The actual problem is probably carbon deposits like Roger mentioned, but doing the things I mentioned usally helps, just things I've noticed from a 706 gas.

with engine running max rpm, sqirt auto trans fluid into the intake of carb. It will white smoke like crazy but it will burn the carbon out and cure the problem. Probably need to sqirt at least 1/2 quart in it but do it slowly or the engine will stall.

John, Usually the reason gasoline engines diesel after you shut them off is because of carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. What happens is that the carbon gets so hot it glows and when you shut off the tractor the carbon keeps igniting the fuel. This usually happens before the piston gets to top dead center causing the engine to run backwards after shutting it off. I have a Super H that is bad for that as I don't pull it hard to burn out the carbon. I now just automatically shut off the engine and let out the clutch with the tractor in gear to kill the engine before it has a chance to run backwords (bad part of running backwards is it spews oil out the air cleaner). You might try some carbon removal additives in the gasoline. Roger
