YTers,
The NAPA 1172 oil filter that I got isn't quite like the Hastings filter that I took out of my A. The spring on the bottom doesn't fit quite right. Does the bottom of the oil filter seal against anything? Where does the oil come from and go to inside the filter case?
Thanks,
Bill

The taper end goes down, the spring goes on the top, if you put the spring on the bottom the oil will not circulate through the filter.. keep an eye on the rubber gasket at the base

Bill, I think thats the NAPA oil filter that I use on my 42 A. Its the long cartridge type, so I think you will be OK with that filter. As far as the oil flow I believe oil goes from oil pump through the block past oil pressure gage and then into oilfilter dome which is sealed on bottom of dome with a rubber ring. Oil then goes through oil filter back into oil pan. Obviously oil has other passages for the rest of the engine. If Im incorrect Im sure the other guys will let me know!

Scotty,
My oil filter had an external spring on it that is not shown in the manual. I think that the NAPA filter is supposed to be installed with the longer tube down and the shorter tube (with the internal seal) up, then the spring goes on top and the dome presses against it, which holds the filter down in the hole. Is that right? Without the spring on top, nothing would prevent oil from short circuiting the filter, I think.
Thanks,
Bill
