Crankcase holds 5 quarts. Trans case holds 4.5 qts, add 1 more qt if it has belt pulley and pto. Rear axle drives hold 3 pt each. Use 90W or 85W-140 in the trans and final drives. Hytran will leak more and cause excessive gear clash when shifting. 30 weight oil in engine, 15W-40 if you live in a cold climate and want a year-round oil. You said it was an A, not a Super. If it is a Super, use Hytran in the hydraulics.

The A and C have the same engine. My C took 6 quarts of oil. I would start by putting in oil until it comes out the lower petcock. Close it and add until it comes out of the upper one. Close that and then run the engine. That will fill the filter. Shut off the engine. Let it sit a couple of minutes to let the oil drain down. As long as oil comes out of the lower petcock you are ok. If you have a partial container of oil you could fill it back up to the level of the upper petcock. As long as you get oil out of the lower one you will be ok. 30W non-detergent would be appropriate for the engine. Be prepared for some new leaks. My C looked ok until I filled the rear-end/transmission to normal levels. I had to replace just about every seal to stem the flow of oil. Good luck.

the napa filter is a 1156 when changing the filter and oil it takes 8 quarts. the filter should be installed with the tapered end down, the spring goes on the top of the filter with the bolt running through it.l I would not try to run her with only 4 quarts..... ..... you are asking for problems. stick with a 30 weight non detergent, if you switch to a detergent oil all the sludge will free up and plug up the passages. Good luck

Brent;
Engine - Start by putting in 4 qts 30W oil, run engine for a few minutes and check by opening the lower of the two petcocks on the left side of the oil pan. If oil drips out open the top one. Filters are available from dealer or NAPA. You will probably need to add oil to fill until oil comes out of the top one.

Gear boxes - 90W gear lube. The final drives are drained by removing the two pans. New gaskets are available from dealer. Fill until oil runs out of plugs just above pan line.
Transmission - 90W gear lube. Fill plug is in top cover and full level plug is in outboard side at foward end behind brake rod.

Later on you might change to Hi-Tran available from Case/IH dealer in the gear boxes but for starters 90W will do fine.
