About ready to buy the 656 Hydro i spoke of last month. It is a 1967 model with a new front end loader and 2600 hours.(must have been dormant for some time, but man swears to the hours) I have heard mixed opinions about the hydro. He wants $8500 for it. What do ya'll think?

My dad has a 656 diesel hydro, I'm not sure of the year but think it is a '70. Anyway, it has a International loader and looks to have been well used, also quite a bit of pulling hard by the looks of the drawbar. Motor runs great but the trans is only good in low range right now(I've not been able to get around to fixing it for him yet)but seems to work fine. Anyway, he paid ~ $ 8000 usd six or seven years ago.

I'd test it out a bit first. Drive it around for twenty or thirty min to get her warm then with it in High range and the throtle moderatly up and move the direction selector into forward half way with the brakes fully on and the engine should stall. Now with the range selector in Low and everything else the same maybe a bit more throtle it should overcome the brakes. At least that's what I remember of an old one we had years and years ago that had about 1500 hrs on it.

If the Hydro is good it will stop the engine should be good for what you want to do. I knew a fother son team that did all there work with 656H and a70H they loved them.

A Hydro is great for loader work and things like cutting and baling hay, infinite speeds with the push of a lever. They are spendy to rebuild, but what transmission isn't??? If hours are truly actual and the loader is high quality (Westendorf, CaseIH), the price doesn't seem too bad, maybe a little high though.

I will be moving brush, cleaning fence rows, moving soil, bush hogging, etc. The motor runs good and the tranny feels strong. Thanks for the reply, GP.
