I am replacing all the oil seals and gaskets on my 46 A. I notice that the new IH oil seals are considerably different from the original IH oil seals that were installed on the tractor, I mean the seal on my PTO was built like a Sherman Tank (and was a bear to remove). Are the new seals as good as the originals and do they hold up? The new seals are thinner, do you use two in the place of one old one?

Brad - Not to worry!! Seal technology has advanced a LOT in the half century since your A was built. Elastomers like Viton have replaced the cow hide in seals. Results in more compact, better performing and longer lasting seals. There's no need to install 2 seals. As Dave_Id suggests unless you pack the space between the seals with grease, the outer one is liable to destroy itself from lack of lubrication after a while anyway. Best to save your $ and effort and install only a single seal.

I used two to replace the one, on a pto seal, but guys have said if you use two, the outside one won't get the required lubrication, and will dry out. More important is to position the seal so that it will be in a fresh spot, not in a place where the shaft got worn from the old seal
