We had this happen to Dad's Super C when I was a teenager. As I recall there was a small part that was worn. I know we pulled the transmission top cover but can't remember if we actually had to when we replaced the part. Unfortionately I can't quite picture part, but that was over 30 years ago.

You do not have to remove the top cover just knock the pin out of the shift lever. After it is removed look down and move the shift rail intil it lines up with the other two. There will be one that does not line up with the other two Your end of the shift lever mite be worn and this can let it get out of place. You mite have to push clutch in to relieve the pressure so you can move it. When you look down after removing the shift lever it will be plain to see what happened. The pin you drove out mite be worn enough to cause the problem. Not hard to do. This happens to all I-H sooner or later. You are not the lone wolf to have this happen.

Hi, would appear the shifter fork (upside down U connected to shift lever mech.) for fourth gear has jumped out of the collar on fourth gear.
Had a JD 420U that used to do same in 2nd gear.
Solution was as in previous reply.

1)Put gear shift level in neutral.
2)Remove bolts holding gear shift/top cover of transmission.
3)Lift cover straight off trans and do not move gear shift level.
4)Locate 4th gear this will be the gear engaged with another gear.
5)Use a long screw driver or pry bar to move the 4th gear into the neutral position. Sometimes depressing the clutch or rocking the rear wheels is necessary to release the gear.
6)Align all the gears so that when the cover plate is reinstalled the shifter forks will go into the groves in the collar of the gears.
7)reinstall cover and just instal two or three bolts and check for proper shifting before reinstalling all bolts.

Good luck
JB

I'm not sure if they are the same or not but I've got a B and it's had the same thing happen a few times. Just pull the top cover and get all the syncros in neutral and be sure the shift forks are in neutral also. Then carefully put the cover back on. It's really pretty easy. I think the shifter is just worn out and getting stuck.

Sounds like you will need to pull off the top cover of the transmission to take a look-see. I haven't had the privilege of doing this on either of my C's yet. I am sure there are others that can give you some guidance on the do's and don'ts. A shop manual would be very helpful. Looking at the parts manual for a straight C doesn't look like it is tooooo complicated. I would guess that you need to get the gear shifters lined up in neutral before putting the cover back on, making sure you don't bump something as the shifter lever is dropped into place. Easier said than done, I'm sure. Good luck.
