The engine in my 400 is due for an overhaul. My brother suggested that I have the sleeves bored out to 4-1/8 inches (the bore of a 450) and put 450 pistons in it. Is this possible? Which head gasket would I need?

I have a set of IH Firecrater pistons and sleeves used but in very good condition with new rings and wrist pins that will fit and give you 281 displacement. You will need M or Super M rods since these are from a Super M. All will fit. If you are interested please contact me. Price about half of new. I also have available rods.

The 400 came with 4” pistons and IH came out with 4 1/8 pistons upgrade when the 450 came up. With the upgrade it still isn’t a true 450 because IH changed the cam in the 450. You have to check as to what wrist pins that you have. The early 400 had 1 1/18” wrist pins in the pistons and the late 400s had the 1” wrist pins.

Update on 400 engine rebuild: We took the head off on Sept the 9. Randy Hall is correct. This thing does have 4-1/8 sleeves, but the pistons are absurdly loose and wobble a great deal. The sleeves are badly scratched also. We're thinking that someone installed 450 sleeves but kept the old pistons. When I get some part numbers on these things, I'll post an update and seek advice. Almost forgot: Lots antifreeze on top of the head. Oh what fun.

i would be surprised if it doesn't already have 4 1/8" pistons in it from a previous overhaul.

Just paint your 400 to match a 450's color scheme, and change the emblems. Whose gonna know?

By the way 209.41.233.211, why do you change your name each time you post?

Shouldn't have done that. I recognized the post as coming from my brother, and I wanted to tweak him a bit. This isn't the place for that stuff.

Someone who buys the tractor thinking it is a 450, and who does not check the serial number or prefix. There are already too many "upgrades" caused by a spray gun or decals already.

Just get the thin sleeve kit and make it a 450.
