I am breaking down the fron end assembly on my 40 model H.

The front wheel bolts are pretty rusty.

Q: Can I just replace them with a grade 8 bolt of the same size, or do I need to order them from the IH dealer?

Shouldn't they be "coated" with something?

A related question was asked a few days ago. They don't list the grade, but look at Link

Even grade 5 bolts will work fine. Fine thread bolts hold the vibration a little better.

Most bolts are cadmium plated which helps avoid rust.

I don't think you can get original style bolts from IH even if you are a real purist.

I'm assuming you are talking about those square bolts holding the clamps on the rims, right? I'd be surprised if they even classified those as Class 2. Other hex bolts will certainly work, but they'll spin in the cast wheel, cuz they have a smaller area gripping the metal, than the square head. NiCad bolts of course won't rust as easy, the square ones don't have any coating, but can be painted, or lubed with NeverSeize on assembly

Grade 2 bolts are not adequate for the wheel clamps, either on the front or the rear. The original IH bolts are definitely more than a grade 2. I think a grade 5 would be adequate, the grade 8 better. It's hard to find square head bolts in grade 5 or better. Most of the after market folks I've found selling square head bolts have grade 2 bolts. I've passed them up and gone to the IH dealer or used hex head bolts. Hex heads work pretty good on the front wheels, but I would avoid them on the rear.

Bill, You can find square head bolts at most any fastener supply house. I don't know how big your town is, but most cities of 30,000 or more population will most likely have a wholesale supplier. Grade 8 is an over-kill for sure. Grade 5 or even grade 3 will do just fine. Fine thread is best, and use flat washers and lock washers, and hex nuts. coating the threads with never-seize will keep the bolts from rusting, provided you dont get bolts too long. 1/8th inch of threads showing after tightening is plenty.
