I'm looking for info regarding an old Farmall F-20 tractor. It was part of a farming display at a nature center long ago. Rather than remove it, I would like to post some information about it for our visitors. I'm looking for cultural info such as possible price, who (in general) purchased this model - e.g. corn growers, soybean growers, small acreage farmers, and a possible picture when it was new (actual or catalog?). I'm not sure of it's date of origin. If anyone can point me in the right direction to find more about this type of tractor, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! JV

The F-20 was produced from 32 to 40. It was very simular to its earlier era tractor the regular. It was fairly masively produced, and the area in which these tractors landed and were sold new would pretty much be widespread since it was a row crop tractor. This tractor was pretty primitive and produced in the horse drawn to tractor era of farm equipment. A few changes during its production was, the introduction of rubber tires, the color change from grey to red, the fan belt went from a flat to a V belt, and battery start was introduced at the very end of its production. It was the last of the unstyled era. The letter series replaced the F-20 with the H. It was styled and a little more streamlined with more options. That was alot bigger change than the regular to F-20 transition. The H was released with a road gear, battery start, generator, and lights, hydraulics, a grill, and rubber tires which made it alot less primitive. The F-20 could pull 2 12" plows in average soil, and maybe 3 in good pulling dirt. It had brakes that were activated by steering (you turn and the steering would apply braking to the inside wheel) and you could basically turn the inside rear wheel around on a dime. Most tractors were wide tread, but narrow tread was also offered (they had shorter rear axels). Well I could go on but I am sure you can research this more on your own.

If the metal ID tag is still on the tool box, under the gas tank, find the serial number, then using this site, go to the serial number list, under research and info on the left side of this page. That will tell you the year. The year will determine the color. The use of the tractor would have varied a lot depending on what part of the country you are in. Generally it was used for row crops. The belt drive pully could also supply power for stationary equipment, such as silage blowers, cord wood saws, etc.

I suggest that you get a copy of the Photo Archive "Farmall F-Series. It includes pictures of the F-20 at work as well as the other F series tractors F-12,14,30.

The book was edited by P.A. Letourneau. The photographs are from the McCormick-International Harvester Company Collection.

If you ask for ISBN 1-882256-02-6 your local book store should be able to get you a copy.

All of the photographs are black and white. Keep in mind, the F-20 was painted Gray until November 1st 1936. Any Farmalls produced after this date were to be painted Harvester Red.

Here is a picture of my '37 F-20 with electric start.

Ebay is a great place to buy the F-Series photo archive book. I got one there for a reasonable price and it's been very useful for identification and to see what some of the original manifolds, linkages, and steel wheels looked like. A recommended resource for any F-20 restorer.
