Was out poking around on another site and they were comparing JD (I know, I know) models to IH models for HP ratings. I noticed something that I had always wondered about, and that was model-# conventions for IH. Here's what I think...(post hundred series)...the last number is how many cylinders, and the first two or three nums is HP. 806=80 horse 6 cyl, 606=60 horse six cyl, 574 57 horse 4 cyl, 724= 72 horse 4 cyl, 1066= 106 horse 6 cyl, 1456=145 horse 6 cyl, 1468 = 146 horse 8 cyl, etc...

Sound right to you? Guy Fay or Harold?

Baggsy,

Part of your theory is right and part of it is wrong. Generally, you are correct in that the last number did repersent the number of cylinders, starting with the 404, 706, 806, 1206, etc. However, the first number or numbers has nothing to do with horsepower, only generally accending sizes. 806 is 94.93 pto hp, 1206 is 112.64 pto hp, 1456 is 131.80 pto hp. Close in lots of examples but not the reason for the numbers.

Humm. Sounds like you might be on to something there. How about lottery numbers? Do you see any lottery numbers?
