Cylinder rust

I need some advice on my engine sleeves. As I pulled the head off to do a valve job, I noticed that a couple of the cylinder walls have dark spots from light rusting and pitting. You just about can't feel it, and it won't catch on a finger nail. Is it time to put in new sleeves, or just go ahead and reassemble and not worry about it. There are no ridges at the top of the cylinders.

Any body else have this problem.?

Ben

Ben, I would recommend bore scoping the sleeves to ensure they are still within tolerance. Then before reassembly, spray light oil into the sleeves and use a cylinder hone to "buff" up the sleeves. Of course this requires removal of the pistons first which gives you a good reason to check the rings and bearings. You want to make sure there is not some damage to the rings in those cylinders with the rust. Good luck.

Ben, is this a gas or diesel engine? Is the rust above the top ring area of the sleeve? Is the rust in the same area in the cylinders that have rust?
