I have a nice Wide Front Farmall H. S/N indicates a 1948.

I love the tractor, but the 5th gear, (road gear), pops out while cruising in 5th. The only way I can use this is to hold it in by pushing down.

Does anyone have any ideas on what may be wrong and how extensive the repair may be?

I would think the 4th 5th slider gear is wearing out. They are about $100 if you order them on the internet or about $200 from the International dealer. If you look for a used one look at it real close before getting it. It is not real hard to change out but you will have to take the top off the trans. and the drive shaft out of it. The small bearing from the main shaft to the driving shaft may also be bad. I just did this in a W-4. Good luck.

I agree, shifter forks may also be worn, they can be built up.

There is a bolt thru the deck near the steering post that was used to lock the tractor out of 5th when the tractor was delivered with steel wheels. To unlock 5th, that bolt must be taken out and replaced with a shorter one to fill the hole. If the deck on the top of the transmission was off recently maybe one of the longer bolts was put in it's place in error.
