Folks, '52 Super C with Fasthitch does not "go" while in gear unless the left brake is pushed, thereby transfering power to the right wheel. Is this a broken left axel or could it be something else? No noise from the trans or differential to give anything away. ALSO, looking for Stan from VA as I know he is a master on these things and is only 15 or so miles away!! PS. The SC belongs to the guy where I keep my 230 which is doing his 10 acres worth of grass cutting (Worksaver 3pt and 7ft Kioti finish mower) Need my tractor back!!Pls Help!! BobG in VA

Been there, done that, several times. From the description I am 99% sure that either the axle is broken right at the bull gear, or the splines are stripped out of the bull gear hub. This is a weak point on the C, Super C, 200, and I think the 230. Be real picky about a used axle, if that's what you replace it with. The cracks start right where the outer edge of the bull gear rides on the axle. A little time with a magnifying glass and maybe some dye penetrant might save doing the job twice. I don't know if new ones are still available, but they were over $300 twenty years ago.

Hi BobG, Sounds like the Bull Gear Retainer has fallen off, allowing enough looseness so the differential will not work properly. You will have to remove the top cover to see down in there in order to see the root of the problem. I don't think there is a broken axle, may be a broken gear?

Hey Bob,
I'm still around. Sounds like you use that 'Master' term pretty loosly ;) ;) I'll check around for your email addr. If I still have it from last winter(?) when we first talked, I'll contact you direct. Sounds like your friend needs to either split the tractor and swap the rear out or dissasemble everything till the top plate can come off and fix it that way, your choice ;) :) Happy to help if I can,
Stan(VA).

Bob,
Obviously something after the differential is broken or disconnected. The axle would be at the top of my list of suspects. Do you notice any tire lean on the left side? Break could be between bearings (thus the tire lean question) or between bull gear and inner bearing. I would think teeth stripped off the bull gear or bull pinion would make some noise and at least function where the teeth are still good. So I'd look hard at the axle. Try removing the outer bearing retainer and see if you can pull the axle/bearing out any significant amount. If axle is intact,it won't come out until you remove the bull gear. Good luck.

IF the axle was broken how would the brake hold it? If I remember right the brakes are ahead of the axle like a H or M. I would DIG in and check it out. I have been wrong before.

The brake is on the pinion shaft which drives the bull gear. It the axle is broken, pinion has nothing to drive, so all the power goes to that side and none to the side with the good axle. By holding the brake, you cause the pinion gear to stop and power goes to the other side through the differential and you have one wheel drive.
