I may soon be looking for a 10 or 1486 tractor because they are so cheap and can do what a modern tractor can do (2 wheel drive). Atleast they have the dual PTO. I like the older tractors for haveing little or no computers in them. When you put them in gear and let the clutch out, they just go, no computer holds them back. In my area, a 14' can range from 11 to 14 thousand. What should i be looking for? The shifting i could fix a little, but is there much else? The engines rarely gave trouble. all i need to know is what would be an emidiate NO for the tractor when i test one. Maybe what you would give for one and in what condition.

Personally, I would stick with the 1086 - in my area they seem to be the most reliable. 1486 had more power but basically the same transmission and rearend, several neighbors have had reliability problems. The 1586 had the dumb 3-speed transmission and was unhandy speeds in every gear.

Our 1086 has 8000 hours on it with little problem. A bearing went out in the rearend, balls ran through the gears and we had to rebuild it. Engine was overhauled just because we could afford it a couple years ago, only used 1 gallon of oil in 100 hours with 7200 hours on engine. DT414 is what it has in it. Our 1086 put out 145 hp on the dyno after overhaul. Been a good rig.

Things to watch out for: Sloppy shifting as a result of being used with a loader. They didn't shift great to begin with, and loader use wears things out faster. The TA - original lasted 7500 hours with normal useage. We put in the mechanical diode TA. When it went out the tractor would jump when letting the clutch out - also wouldn't pull a full load in low.

There is a nice 1086 near here with a nice loader on it - about 6500 hours, fresh overhaul, not beat up or anything, I think they want $10,000. Saw a decent 1486 sell at auction last year with 5500 hours and duals for $6500. Most people don't want them because they don't have a power shift or synchro transmission.

If a person could take one of those transmissions and take all the guts out of it and put in about a 12 speed full power shift there would be NONE BETTER!!! I loved my 1086 but after 9200 hours and a tax problem I traded it off. Wish I had kept it and purchased the magnum outright. 1086=GOOD CHOICE
