Have heard many tractors rated by how many bottoms they will pull. A guy told me my 300 was a three bottom tractor. Is that ture? I didn't think it was rated that high.

Thanks!!

My 300 is in pretty good shape and I have tried to plow with a 3-14 john deere. In our ground around here it is not a 3 plow tractor, in places I could run ok but others I just ran out of steam and weight, and trying to plow that way takes all the fun out of it. I have found a nice 2-14 IH plow since then but have never used it yet. From my experience you will be much happier with 2 bottoms but keep in mind as others have said it all depends on the type of soil. Brian

in high school years, i spent a lot of time on a 300 pulling a 311 plow, 3- 16s. most of it was on river bottom silt loam, plowing in 3rd with ta ahead.

Brian: I plowed a good many acres of my sandy loam soil with 300 and 3x16 No.60 plow. I also had a 4x16 No. 60 I used behind my 560 diesel. The 300 worked a lot harder than the 560. I rather doubt you could pull 3 bottoms in heavy clay. I'm thinking even clay loams would cause one a lot of grief. 14" bottoms may make a difference. I used 16" as I plowed in same field together with both units. The 300 was definately at it's limit with 3x16 in that light soil. If I remember correctly advertising called H, SH, 300 and 350 first 2 plow then 2-3 plow and 3 plow. Not just sure where change happened, but H was definately 2 plow and 350 was 3 plow. I'm thinking SH and 300 were called 2-3 plow tractors.

Yea, it should pull a three bottom plow easily in most types of ground. Dave

A 300 in my ground wouldn't pull a 3 bottom in 2ed gear, low side. They were rated at a 2, possibly 3 in sandy ground.

Pulled 3-14 plow with 300U 3rd. gear most of the time, it has same hp. as a stock M.
