I am looking about buying a 1 row corn planter that hooks onto the cultivator frames. Will the fertilizer box work, without the seed hopper, for side dressing on my plants? Not real sure of the hook up if any one can give any ideas. Thanks

If it's an IH planter, the fertilizer attachment will work by itself.Ours was bought new in '54 for a Super A and is currently on our "140". Unit drives off of a gear that bolts on the inside of left rear drop axle, with a chain running from gear to planter unit mounted to torque tube/bell housing of tractor. Unit doesn't run until lift is lowered which engages two gears on planter shaft. We just remove planter hopper & attach cultivators to sidedress. Also one inside plow foot is removed and replaced with a hollow one that fertilizer tube fits into, which puts fertilizer into the ground.

Bryan: I'm not real sure on this either, as I have always had rear mounted two row planters with fertilizer hoppers right on them.

I have always understood though that the mid mount single row planter was nothing more than an addition to the side dresser. The side dresser also relies on the cultivator lift frames as well. I may not be 100% correct on this as some of those side dressing units are after market. I'm sure that with some imagination and a bit of fabrication it could be made to work that way.

Hugh McKay should answer this. The planter is probably ground drive, whereas the fertilizer probably drives off the axle shafts or transmission. You will may need to use some type of an opener, unless you simply want to dribble it on the ground. This would work ok for nitrogen and possibly potassium, but phosphorus works best if you get it down by the roots.

CNKS: I've done a bit of looking since my earlier post and what I see on this is they just use a side dresser driven from the seed plate drive on the left rear axle. For planting the cultivator ground working tools and fertilizer boots are removed. The ground drive planter complete with fertilizer boots is installed and the fertilizer tubes from the side dresser are attached to the boots on the planter. I think you must use dual fertilizer boots in both cases. This part could vary a bit as I have seen these side dressers with one fertilizer tube and I have also seen them with two fertilizer tubes. I think it would be just a matter of matching what you add with what you have. Even if the equipment is aftermarket the system is very much the same.

My dad had a front-mount side dresser on a B in the 40's, but my memory is simply not that good.
