off topic hyd question

i am not sure about the word '' dentent '' in hyd terminalogy? if you have say a hyd valve with a double dentent it would make a double acting hyd cylinder keep cycling until valve was manualy put in ''neautral''? any and all ideas appreciated

A detent is a term used to hold the valve in position, (actually a spring loaded plunger holds the valve spool in position until the lever is moved) Double detent means exactly like it sounds, 2 hold postions

A detented valve stays where you put it when you let go of the handle rather than spring back to center when you let go. It will likely spring back to center when end of stroke is reached. A valve for a double acting cylinder may be detented both ways or just one depending on application. A valve for a wood slitter is generally not detented on the split stroke but detented on the return stroke. It will return to center immediately when you let go on the split stroke but will retract the cylinder completely if you slap it the other way and go grab another block of wood. On a hoe or loader the valves would not be detented either direction.

unless the loader has a float position. (the hyd. lines are "open" to the resevoir so the bucket can "float" over whatever you are grading)
