Thanks to Bob Melville you guys have a 12 Volt tractor wiring diagram. I know not much about this diagram, but it looks very good. Hope it helps someone.

Good diagram. I made a printout of it and compared it with my Super A and they are exactly alike except for the warning light. Also, I had to put a extra toggle switch between the ammeter gauge and starter to interupt a continuous flow of electricity to keep from running the battery down while not in use. Anyone have any ideas on what my particular problem is and why I had to do this and any suggestions on how to eliminate the extra toggle switch? I thought it was just a neccesary evil.

Add the warning light (or substitute a 10 ohm resistor for the lamp if you don't want a warning light) and you can eliminate the toggle switch.

This all assumes an alternator with internal regulator right?

Ludwig - Diagram is for the Delco type 10SI or 15SI internally-regulated alternator. These were used on nearly every GM car from the mid-70's thru the mid-80's
- readily available and inexpensive!

Just checkin, I'm still learning when it comes to the electrics. I want to make sure I get everything right in my mind.

Thanks for the schematic. I just converted my Super M about 2 weeks ago. This looks like a cleaner way to wire it than the way I did it. It looks like the warning light goes off if the engine is running and you are not charging. Is that correct? Does the resistance of the warning light make it so you don't need a diode to keep the battery from discharging over time?

Rich - The warning light works like the alternator idiot light in most cars: Lights up if the ign is "on" and the battery is NOT being charged. Otherwise the light remains dark.

And you are correct about the resistance of the warning light - it eliminates the need for a blocking diode in the circuit. ...Bob M

Try as I might, I can't figure out why the warning light is off when the system is charging and on when it is not. Could someone please educate me?

Rich,
The light goes out because the voltage is the same on both sides of it when the battery is being charged. No voltage differential across the light means no current through the light and no glow.

So that's how that works! I've made conversions using the light and never considered that possibility. I was under the impression the alternator somehow opened the circuit internally. I should have checked it with a voltmeter. BTW this is SOOO much better than the switch to excite the alternator. I've seen this done on several tractors and the extra step just to keep the battery up is a hassle when there are several drivers. Theman
