The fellow I bought my 140 from said to put motor oil in the hydraulics reservoir. I have never heard of this before. The 140 has 2 way hyrdraulics, with front and rear arms.

Do I want to change it to hydraulic fluid? If so, do I just drain and refill?

Thanks for all of your input. I agree with all of you. Ideally, I would only put in hydraulic fluid. However, I suspect that the seals currently leak. So I think I should see a great improvement if I go to non detergent 20w. I suspect that currently it has 30w detergent oil. My thinking is that a little 20w leaking into 10w 30 detergent motor oil won't hurt anything for a little while under the light use I give this tractor. Would I do it in a car? No. But I am thinking that hydraulic fluid would be worse in the crankase.

I've got a Super A, which is an earlier version of the 140. In the last 20 years, I've had the O-rings in the little hyd. pump go out at least three times. Each time it happens, It pumps the hyd. system oil into the crank case. At first this starts slow, I just drain excess CC oil, and top off the hyd. system. Eventually it gets so bad, I have to take the pump off & put in new seals. This is the reason I use the same oil in the hyd. system as I have in the engine. I don't want the engine crank case full of some kind of hydraulic fluid. I use straight NON-DET. 30wt. in both the engine and the hydraulics. If you use a detergent oil, the hydraulics will foam & the pump will cavitate, giving you erratic operation of the lift arms. (another way to look at this, if I used hydraulic oil in the hyd system, the seals might last longer in the first place!)..... ..... DDG

Use only IHC HY-Tran fluid. If that's a problem, you have a problem somewhere else and should fix that but motor oil is not a good hydraulic oil. It doesn't deal as well with condensation, it tends to foam, get too thick in the cold; just not a good deal all the way around.
