Should bearings be replaced as a matter of course?

I have my 46 A completely taken apart and have been replacing all the oil seals. I have found only one bad bearing, in the belt pully housing. All other bearings look good. My question is; now that I have the differential shaft housing and drop axles taken apart would it make sense to replace all bearings in the rear end, even the ones that still feel good? What are your thoughts on this aspect of restoration?

My experience with a Super A is that too often the final drive unit has little or no oil left in it and the outboard bearing on the axle shaft at the top of the final drive is starved of oil and is worn and loose. I replaced those on both sides. Look them over closely.

You might also consider how badly you had to beat them up in the teardown process.

If the bearings have no play, no rust, and turn freely and smoothly, no need to replace them.

Brad, You could do that if you have a lot of money. I usually only replace the bearings that are either rusted or don't turn freely (rusty ones don't turn freely). I also look at the bearing location and how much it is loaded or used. It also depends on your intent in restoration. If you intend to use this tractor heavily then it may make sense to replace the bearings, especially the ones that turn at a higher rpm. For example, I haven't been replacing bearings in the belt pulley assembly on my Farmall H; because I don't use that except for show. Roger

Here's my 2 cents worth. I say leave them alone if they are still good. The bearings you buy may not be as good as the originals. This is an area that you get what you pay for.
