My M has been starting fine, just changed over to 12 volt. This morning it let a horrific pop through the muffler and wouldn't start after that. Blown piston? Time for a compression check? It turns over fine and there is spark at the plug wires and coil. Any ideas to share? I've never rebuilt an engine Yet!! Thanks for any advice. Dick in Vermont.

Since it turn over fine I doubt that anything may have broken. Like the others put forth, sounds like the ignition is the problem.

not sure about the pop but as mentioned you have to either use a 12 voldt coil or a ballist resister ahead of the coil when converting to 12 volt. If either the resister in the coil or the ballist go it will not run. I would think you wouldn't get any spark then though. I suppose the other possibility is that your camshaft gear broke or is loose.

you can check the compression, but I would check the ignition out first. Sometimes when they get converted to 12 volts, you need a 12 v coil and use a ballast resistor for the coil. I would say you blown up the condensor, have seen this before, and the engine will pop, and die, and not restart. Double check you ignition, make sure it is working. It is common for this to happen with 12 volt conversions and not use different parts to use 12 volt. Just my opinion, ChadS
