Purchased the IH 424 a few years back. Needed an exaust system and brakes. Neither was a problem and the person that I purchased it from said that it now had good brakes for an IH. Now that I have used it for awhile I keep thinking that it should not take so much pedal pressure to apply the brakes. I cleaned the plates that apply pressure to the disk and also cleaned the steel balls and springs between them and replaced the four disk pads. I did not lubricate/grease the ball area.Everything appeared fine and I do have brakes. Is there something I overlooked or is it normal for this tractor to require a lot of pedal pressure.

Buck, Considering these are purely mechanical disc brakes, they will take more pressure than any hydraulic assisted disc brake system ie; your truck or car. It sounds like you did everything right in your brake overhaul...make sure your pedal freeplay is set by the manual. Some folks elect to lubricate the balls, I don't because they will attract brake dust and gum up if you lubed them after a period of use. One other thing to check is the scissor looking assembly where it bolts onto the actuator plates (with the balls inside) and the adjustment bolt that sticks out through the drum. Make sure thats not rusted up or corroded. Good luck. FB

Thanks for the kind words, always try to help especially when/where I can. I'm only sorry that my Navy career took me out of the Farmall loop from '65-'95. Not too many tractors out there on destroyers and cruisers. :-))))

Hey Farmer Bob: Thanks for the info. This puts me at ease as you seem to know this kind of thing. Have seen your remarks on other post and is always helpful to have advice from someone who has been there. Keep up the good work.
