I mounted my 3pt disc mower to cut some hay and noticed I had a bad hydraulic fluid leak where the 3pt arm shaft goes through the rear end housing. Has anyone replaced these the seals and bushings? I know you have to take pto housing off to get to it. Any suggestions or hints to help? Thanks in advance.

Brad,
I broke the tube on my 1066 couple years back. Found a good one and bought new bushings from CaseIH. Replaced it all myself with encouragement from the guys here.

First, drain the hyd. oil from the plug above the drawbar tube (12 or 15 gallons if I remember right). PTO unit has to come out. Unpin lift arms at the tractor and swing out of the way. Removed one of the crank arms and slid the shaft and tube out the other way. My tractor still had the original steel bushings in it, so I turned my welder down low and ran a few beads on each bushing to draw them up a little and knocked them out.

The tractor vet told me to let my new nylon bushings spend the night in the freezer to shrink. Took them from the freezer and tapped them in using an oak block as a drift.

Slide the tude and shaft assembly back in and reinstall everything.

It's kinda awkward to get to and sounds a little simpler than it actually is, but it ain't that bad of a job.

If I think of anything else I went through, I'll post it.

E-mail me if you want.

Mitch

Brad, If the rear end of a 986 is anything like a 966 that is as indepth process. Sent mine to a local shop to have fixed 3 yrs ago. The pto has to be removed first before the lower rock shaft can be removed.
Mine would pour oil out, to the tune of 5 gal/ day. Good Luck.
Later,
John A.
