i'm fixing to paint my cub and i am experiencing some trouble tring to smooth out my metal. the hood has alot of surface rust but it is not rusted through, but i cannot seem to get all of the pits out. i was thinking of using some spot putty to get out the pits and have a smooth surface, but i'm worried about it rusting again faster than normal. any help or suggestions?
thanks

I am still tying to track down the guy to get the info on the acid dip... All I know is that he took the parts to them and they did it in a few days. It was some outfit I think a little west of Milwaukee Wisonsin but this is not an uncommon procedure. Might try calling any auto restoration shop and ask where they have their parts acid dipped and they should be able to help. This process is how most resotre old cars because there is no way the rust can com back. I think they charged by the weight, I'm not sure I will post the info when I get it....sorry for the delay!!!p

Try the following sites:
www.stevesantiques.com for a product called POR15 and www.icpi.net for "Rass-O- Nil" Both look like they have promise, but they are totally different products.

Well, it looks like not everybody has had the success with the Extend I have. I'm very pleased, but then I sanded the heck out the sheet metal before I used the Extend. Only tiny pits remained to be converted.. less than the size of a pin head. It's been nine months without any problems.

Ever thought of having it acid dipped. This is an automotive repair and actually eats the rust away and leaves the metal black and protected. the only way to guearantee no more rust, I have not had very good luck with the extend rust stop.

I haven't had very good luck with the Extend rust stop or any of the other brands, either. The acid dip sounds like a promising idea.

not sure right off hand, will check with my autobody friend and get prices and more info. Can't be too bad he had a entire shell off a nova done and it was not to bad. A small hood should be extremely cheap, if there is an outfit near you.

Probably phosphoric acid - nasty stuff for the novice to handle.

I used a product called Extend by Duro for converting the rust to an inert state. I found it a Home Depot, but I've seen it at Ace Hardware too.
