We looked at a Farmall H today. It has a wide front end, it's been redone, looks and runs great. Does any one know what price we should expect to pay for a tractor like this. We were told that the wide front end is original and not an add on, does this tell you what year this tractor is? Thank You Bonnie

The value of the H is defined by what the local traffic will bear. An average, unpainted H with decent tires and running okay, will go for around $800 to $1200 dollars. The wide front end adds value to the tune of anywhere from $500 to $1000 dollars. A good paint job ought to add anywhere from $350 to $650. So if we add up the numbers, the range would be between $1650 and $3050. Wow! I just scared myself with the high range price! I wouldn't pay more than $2000.

The wide front end doesn't indicate what year. To get the year, find out the serial number of the tractor, go to the 'Farmall IH' link at the top of this page. Once there, look down the left hand column and follow the link 'Farmall Serial Nbrs' there it will give you the range of serial numbers that were made in each year.

AS to what price would be right, there are a lot of variables that contribute to making that decision - location, number of hours on the tractor or how much use it's gotten, if it has been 'redone' how much has been 'redone' - a complete engine rebuild or a paint job?

My advice would be to try to get some experienced help to view it with you. In the category 'Research & Info' in the left-hand column on this page, there's an 'Articles' link. Follow that and read the articles on buying a tractor. That'll give you a general overview of what to look for and maybe your experienced help can help you with what to look for. Then you can report what you find back here and those more experienced than I can offer their opinions on if it's worth it.

I looked at tractors around Connecticut for a couple of years before I felt I had an idea of what was a reasonable deal. I was lucky enough to have time to do that.
