Have two farmall 140's. One a 1962 model other a 1974 Int. Book with the 62 recommends 30wt oil or 10w-30. The 1974 manual recommends just 30wt oil and advises against a multi viscosity. Currently use 30 wt in both. Tractors see only minimal use in winter temp's here range from low of 20 to highs 85-95 in summer. Would the 10w-30 be ok to use in winter to reduce start-up wear cause it's thinner or do you think 30 wt is alright year round. When it's 35 F or lower tractor not going to see use. Both are in enclosed sheltered. Also why would 62 book say 10w-30 ok and 74 advise against it's use. Both engines are clean. What would be others view... Thanks

We've always used 30W Low Ash in the spring, summer, fall, and 10W Low Ash in the winter on tractors that run on a regular basis. Occasional-use tractors get changed once a year, 30W Low Ash.

Frankly, I don't think it makes a whopping bit of difference what oil you use as long as it lubricates adequately. The only issue you might run into is if you've got sludge buildup in the engine, then start using a multigrade detergent oil and the sludge starts coming loose.
