I need help with a Farmall A. My tractor for some reason goes through about 2 regulators a year and in between I have to use emery cloth to clean the points in the regulator so it will continue to charge. I have headlights wired to the L post of the regulator then goes to a toggle switch could there be a problem here? Or could it be they don't make regulators like they used to? Also when it is charging properly and I shut my engine off it shows about 5 amps of discharge for a split second until the engine has compleatly stoped running. Is this normal for this to happen?

PLEASE HELP

Thanks
Brian

much of the problem I think is the regulator is not adjusted properly to the generator. An old timer gen/reg repair man told me that a new regulator should always be adjusted on a tester.
The generator outputs vary ande the gen must be in good working order. Maybe he was just looking for business.

I had the generator rebuilt about 2 years ago. And what type of tester do I need to make the proper adjustments? can I just use a multi tester to do the job? Or would I have to take it someplace to have it done?

Thanks
Brent

Today I replaced the regulator and somtime in the past when I was working on it for some reason I took the nut off that holds the field post in place tight to the generator and it was just floating around maby this is what fried my regulator and made my amp guage act eratical I hope this was the problem charges great for now.

Thanks
Brent

sounds about normal to me. When I worked in the repair shop 30 years ago we tinkered with generators all the time. I use a jumper wire to ground the field terminal to get full charge and jerk it off if I am running the tractor a lot.

I have done the same in the past use a jumper wire to ground the field terminal I left the wire on for 25 to 30 minuites and my battery boiled over and eventually ruined my battery. I'am about ready to say to hell with it and rewire the cut-off switch and quit using my regulator. All I got to say is thank god for crank handles I can't afford anymore $40.00 regulators.

Thanks
Brent

In 10 years I have never had my regulators be anything but erratic. Doesn"t matter if we are talking about the old adjustables, or the new solid states. Wired in exactly as shown in the manual, but still they jump around between 4 to 8 volts. 6 Volt seems to be an average thing as usually the gauge passes by 6 a lot. I have replaced generators and manually redone every inch of wire wireharness. Makes no difference. My ring gear is almost smooth and I am too lazy to crack the tractor to replace it. Let"s hear it for cranks. :)
