560 Oil Gauge - Line broke

Clipping on of the pastures today and noticed a "spurt" of oil shooting out the left side of the 560 (1962 gas model). Turns out the line to the oil pressure gauge broke in 1/2 and it was whipping around like a garden hose spraying oil everywhere. Well I didn't have any duct tape or baling wire (just kidding) with me so I used Vice Grip plier to pinch it off and made it home.

Now I went to our local (worthless) farm store (so they call it) and they didn't have a new gauge or line or anything to fix it. Are these lines a special size, or would NAPA or other parts store have one? I have never had to mess with an oil gauge before so don't know too much about them. I assume I can unhook it at the back of the gauge and then at the block and just put in a new line?

I am going to try again to get parts Sunday, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Brent: Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the oil line. Worked many years on those tractors in fact over 30. The line you are referring to is 1/8 " and should have been steel with a copper coating. Not nylon. Many were replaced with it. I never did. Always used steel. It should have compression fittings on each end. When you replace it, do not run oil up the line to other end. Leave with air in line or it will rupture the gauge. I tell you from experience. Good luck. Sorry to hear of your uncle. Guess we are all getting older. So it goes.

brent, i'd use a steel or copper line, though you had good service from the original line. i had a plastic line (replacement) wear thru where the leak wasn't obvious on my 656 and it cost me an engine.

Thanks for the hint, and sorry about your engine.

I lost about 1 quart before I noticed it, and thought to myself that if it were dark or it was squirting down instead of sideways I could have lost my engine too.

Good advice!

Brent,

Run down to your NAPA store. You don't need the gauge.

Get a length of 1/8" copper tubing, 2 compression nuts and the two little compression sleeves (they can't be reused very sucessfully). The little nuts un-screw at both ends of the line on your tractor.

Probably won't cost you $10 and you're up and running again.

Brent,

Take a piece of the old tube with you....should be 1/8", but I'm not certain.

Thanks Allan, figured they would have it. It is a plastic line, pretty thin, so I will take a chunk with me. I wasn"t sure (haven"t pulled gauge end yet) if it was a compression fitting on both ends, it is the original IH gauge, and original line according to my uncle who bought the tractor new in "62. (He passed away 2 weeks ago, I am glad to have kept the tractor in the family!)
