I want to make new battery cables for my 6V pos ground tractor. I want to use 0/1 guage welding cables. The only ends for the battery I can find are the kind that bolt two pieces of metal together to smash the cable. Is that ok? I think it will corrode fast. Is there a better solder on type? or crimp on type for the big cable?

Thanks for all the help! My tractor is coming allong great!!

Bob

The local NAPA has made cables for me that are for semi trucks that are a crimp on end, but rather than have them crimp them, I solder them when I get home.

I was surprised to find a real nice quality cable, #1 wire, soldered-on ends, nice heavy and even red insulation hanging on the battery rack at the local Wal-Mart for something like 3 bucks. I wasn"t even looking, but they followed me home. They had the junk, but they had the good stuff as well. Worth a look.

James H,

Thanks for the offer but I allready have the welding cable and lugs. What I don't have is the lug that goes on the battery, and shrink wrap.

I will try my local marine store unless you guys have any more ideas.

My Napa only has the cheap bolt/smash on battery lugs. I will try a larger store about thirty minutes from me.

Hey Bob I think that I have all the stuff that you need for the cables. Cables, ends, heat shrink and two styles of crimpers. I do have solder but prefer to crimp them. How about $5.00 total for both cables? If you want me to make them. You have to pay shipping. Where are you located?

James

Soldered terminals are much more durable, and apparently are a much more effective connection electrically. Followed up with heat shrinked tubing, it's an excellent connection.

McMaster-Carr has an extensive selection of wire, cable ends, insulators, solderable lugs, you name it. That said, their prices are a little high.

They have a web based catalog.

Bob: I find the type of ends you are looking for are more readily available at heavy truck repair depots. I expect you may find the same if near marine supply stores.

Hi Bob, You can purchase battery lugs or spades
from most automotive stores and you can solder them yourself. A propane torch will furnish enough heat to solder them. Clean the lugs inside surface with steel wool or a small wire brush so they are nice and shiny. Then apply
flux to the lugs and to the cable ends. We used crimpers too, but it takes a large crimper to do the larger cables. Good Luck, Hal

TSC or, someplace similar, sells ready made 01 ga. cables of varying lengths. Can't beat 'em.

The type of clamp will last for awhile, then when you least expect it, it'll corrode and fail. You can have ends put on your cables at your local IH dealer or Napa
