I have been looking at two 560s. Both are narrow fronts but one is a gas and the other a diesel. I have heard the 282 is cold blooded, but I also heard it is more durable. Both are 1963 models, so the final drives are okay. Both good condition (good metal, paint, newer tires, and well maintained) and each with 6-7000 hours. Which would you buy and how would each be worth. I need to make an offer.

Go with the diesel. My starts great as long as you are patient and let the glow plugs do their job. If you run it hard, let it cool down before you turn it off to save the head. I paid $2800 for mine and have been using it for haying for 4 years now. This winter it has earned a new clutch and TA.

I usually see 560 diesels go for about $2,500 - $2,900 at the auctions around Iowa. I've seen gasers go from $1,600 - $3,300. It just depends on condition and who wants the tractor most. I paid $2,750 for mine 2 yrs ago but mine really ran good and needed little work. Mine also had fast hitch and an IH wide front with flotation tires. Rear rubber was poor and starter was bad. Head had just been done, pump was just rebuilt, and injectors reconditioned. I think I got a great deal!

Hi Bill,

Over the years we have owned two tractors that were just plain no good.

One was a 2010 JD; nothing wrong with it other than it was just plain harmless...couldn't do any work with it! No weight and no power. It was just kind of a little toy tractor. Pulled a rotary hoe okay, I guess. :>)

The other was a 560 diesel; could not keep a head on that guy for love nor money. After the third head warped, she went down the road..... .but hold on, wait a minute.

I honestly think that we just happened to get a bad tractor with possibly a bad block or something. Really.

The 560s have good engines and they have good drive trains.

There are thousands of those old 560s out there and they are still pullin' just fine.

So, if I were faced with your decision, I'd definitely go with the 560 diesel. That gasser will break the bank in it's required fuel costs alone.

Bill, I'm partial to the diesel models. I think the 1963 models had the better injection pumps which gave quicker starting and better governor response under load. They originally came with two six volt batteries hooked in series to get 12 volts. Mine is a 1961 with two 12 volt batteries hooked in parallel to boost amps but retain 12 volts. My starter was just rebuilt and all Summer long it only took 15 seconds of glow plugs before it started right off. This tractor needs to be worked to be appreciated. Fuel consumption is also a big plus for the diesel. I also think it is a smoother performing tractor.

Lance: If you buy right you can get just many amps out of 2-6 colt in series as 2-12 volt parallel. At least you can here in Canada and we do have the cold weather. I had on farm 656 and 560 each with 2-6 volt in series and a Deere with 2-12 volt parallel. All three had the exact same cranking amps. My 1066 had 2-6 volt in series and actually had more cranking amps than any of the other 3. You can achive just as many amps one way as the other.

I agree - go diesel unless some idiot has been shooting either in to it. The 560 requires some time (varies with condition of glow plugs) to start but it is a efficent engine compared to the gas - and is USUALLY more durable. The 560 has been somewhat of a redhead step child and usually sells cheap - especially compared the the ever popular 656.
