C engine siezed

Hello all

Looked at a Farmall C today that my brother-in-law is thinking of buying. The current owners said it quit running earlier this year and would not start again but at the time did crank. Today when we examined it discovered the engine had seized from it being outside without a cover on the exhaust manifold. The sale is pending on me getting it in running condition, so I removed the spark plugs and sprayed some PB blaster down the cylinders and will check back next week to see if the engine has freed up yet. If this does not work my next plan is to pour diesel fuel down each cylinder and let it set another week and hope for the best.

Any one else out there have any other suggestions on things that might free the engine?

BTW I am not that familiar with Farmall tractors so could someone please let me know if they are good tractors and how much horse power they are rated at.

Thanks,

BigWill

I wouldn't get it running for the seller... maybe try to get it unstuck. Don't pull it if stuck.. it may bend a rod or crank or ?? have you tried the starter?? we got a "mildly" stuck 9N unstuck with the starter even though pulling it wouldn't (seized from using either and hadn't sat) you'll need a good battery.. just give it a few little jolts with the starter and watch the fan or crank pully.. have a serverely stuck Case 730 (rain in #2 cyl) trans fluid didn't work.. am trying PB blaster.. may try to put a battery back on it this week yet.. have heard of diesel working too.. good luck..

Hi, I'm like Jonathan, I used transmission fluid
to remove the pistons on an A, some of the sleeves came out with the pistons. I used a torch to heat the sleeves on those and the pistons
were easily removed. Somone mentioned that they
used a little diesel fuel in the cylinders and set them on fire. Heat is a good thing for removing seized parts. Be careful doing this and remove gas tank and anything else that is flammable. Do not do this inside a building.
Take the necessary precautions. Good Luck, Hal

I have had the best luck with a seized engine using transmission fluid, may sound strange but it does wonders !

I got a SC reciently pretty rough. Old guy said ran good a year ago. It was stuck. No 2 plug water poured out all over me when I took it out. Sucked all the water out of that cylinder. Let them all soak in a mix of kerosene and motor. Put a crowbar on the flywheel and it broke loose pretty easy. Cleaned out the carb & tank and it runs great no smoak. If you think the guy is telling the truth about it running and it hasn't sat too long it will be a lot cheaper to take it home not running than to get it running for the seller. Not running it should be worth about half if it looks pretty good and almost free if it's ugly.

Thanks for the reply. Tried the hand crank also attempted to tow the tractor on loose gravle and let the clutch out with the transmission in gear but the engine would not budge. So at this point only time will tell.

Provided there was not engine damage when it quit running, it might not be seized. Remove or at least loosen the starter. If the starter or ring gear are worn, sometimes the starter hangs up. If it has a crank, try that. If it has only been seized a few months, it should free up. C's, like most letter series are excellent tractors, easy to work on and parts are plentiful. IH rated the C at 18.5 drawbar, 20.5 belt.
