Having problem with governor on '44 A. Seems t have alot of slop in the gov itself. Throttle lever will pull it back to idle but just a couple of clicks up and she goes almost wide open. Any suggestions for a fella long on time & tinkering but short on cash? Haven't pulled gov YET, but I guess I'll have to.

Andy, While you are tinkering, try checking how much play or slop you have between the throttle lever and the govenor housing, I had to bore my housing out and install a bushing to get a good fit. While your doing that you may as well order and install a new oil seal also.

Pull the gov and look for broken springs. I think it has two springs. Replace all the springs and make sure the flyweights are free, pins not worn, thrust bearing in good condition. The output shaft may be worn. If worn excessively you can have the housing re-bushed, a new shaft made etc.. Use a new oil seal. Clean it all up good and re-assemble.

Over-revving sounds more like a missing or damaged governor weight (or two). If the little thrust bearing is bad, that can cause problems, or if it has been run too long that way, the fingers on the weights, or the fork may be badly worn.

You're gonna have to take a look inside the governor.

As I'm sure you're aware, the governor is timed to the timing gear so that the slot that drives the mag (or distributor conversion) is in correct correlation to the position of the crankshaft.

Before removing the ignition system, or the governor, rotate the engine unil it's on #1 firing position, and note the position of the rotor (distributor or mag). DO NOT rotate the engine from that point though the duration of the governor repair. After removing the distributor or mag, note the position of the drive slot, at the back of the governor shaft, so the governor can be reinstalled with the slot at that position.

Don"t think she"s over revving, I can push throttle lever to full position and she will rev up a little bit more. Just don"t have much in between and alot of play inside gov housing. Sounds like I"ll have to pull mag again to get to gov. Just got it fixed and back right. Oh well. Thanks for info. AK
