How would you go about identitfing a tractor if the serial number that is by where the block and the transmission connect is missing? The previous owner thinks its a 51 (H that is) He bought it off a guy who sold him a group of tractors, There was a serial number on top of (or close by i don't remeber) the radiator, could I use that to identify the year?

The numbers to look for look like little tags fastened on with screws(part of the casting)An example would be 7-31-K which translates to July 31 1941
H-1938, I-1939, J-1940, K-1941, L-1942, etc up to Z-1954. V was not used. The alphabet started over with A in 1955. ken

Of course Farmalls were not produced by model year.

An H is an H, with very few changes made from 1939 to 1951. You don't need the serial number to buy most parts. The engine serial number is on a boss on the spark plug side of the engine. A lot of engines and tractors had the same serial number, but those that don't match are still close.

The castings are dated, with the month, day, and a letter for the year. Someone wlse will have to help you with which year goes with which letter, I never can find my list.

The tractor will have been assembled soon after the casting date. The date is on a little rectangular raised place on each major casting.

Castings from a salvage tractor may have been installed, so if you have several "T" year castings and one "X" casting, the proper year would have been "T".

Hope this helps some.
