Hi Guy, The engine turns counter-clockwise. After the #1 exhaust valve just closes, the next time that timing mark comes around to the indicator, that's when she's ready to fire. So, there are three ways to tell if you've got it right: 1. Watch that exhaust valve work while you're bumping the engine over and set your ignition to fire #1 the very next time the mark comes around to the indicator after the exhaust valve closes. 2. Hold your thumb in the #1 plug hole to feel the compression while bumping the engine, trying to "catch" the stroke by setting the ignition to fire #1 the very next time the marks align. 3. Or, just go ahead and set your ignition up to fire #1 with the timing pointer aligned on either cycle of the engine. The ignition will either be right or wrong at this point; if it is wrong, she'll belch and backfire back out the carb and this will mean that you are on the wrong stroke. Hope this helps, Allan
