I have a late 52 Super A. I removed the clutch access cover to grease the throw out bearing. My Super A did not have a grease fitting as the manual indicated. Is this normal? I also noticed the access hole cover was not round and did not completely cover the hole. Is this normal?

Bob, The oblong hole in the BOTTOM of the bell housing is normally covered by a plate that bolts thru to a backing strip. This access is for clutch inspection and access to the timing marks. The roundish hole on the left side is the throw out bearing grease access hole as Stan suggested. Red ED

I was concerned because the access hole in the bottom of the bell housing is round, while the cover is oblong. This would seem to allow dirt to enter the bell housing interior. The IH manual I have is a Jennstar reprint. It shows a grease fitting accessable through the oblong hole in the bottom of the bell housing. The manual is obviously wrong or out of date.

That's not the dirt port for the bellhousing. The dirt port is at the rear of the clutch housing, just in front of the transmission. The oblong cover on the bottom of the clutch housing is used to drain the dirt. The cover halfway up the left side is where you check the level of the dirt.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I have found the problem is not dirt, but mice.

When I had mine apart, I found tobacco twine, peanut hulls, and dirt. I think the mouse had already moved out!!

We are talking about the cover half way up the bell housing on the left side as viewed from sitting in the seat? Mine is round with spring clips that hold it in.
If your tractor has been apart before, I believe that the bracket and sleeve that support the bearing can be installed backward with the zerk fitting facing the wrong way.

I'm talking about the plate thats on the bottom of the bell housing. My IH manual shows a fitting under this plate. I have a fitting under the cover on the side that you mentioned.
