An exhaust whistle? My father remembers them having one that they plumbed into the threaded hole in the side of the exhaust manifold. Was operated by pulling a wire/string and apparently let out quite a shriek. Anybody have one or know where to find one? Would be fun to try out I think.

Thanks in advance

Brian

Back in about 1950 I had what was called a "Wolf Whistle". I operated off of the intake manifold (vacuum). Try JC Whitney, don't have one of their catalogs handy. It would be something they might have.

Sure Brian! Punch below for a shot of a 5 chime exhaust whistle spotted on a "Rumley Six" at the Canandaigua Pageant of Steam this summer. It worked great - even with the motor just idling.

Also...a buddy of mine has an intake vacuum - powered "wolf whistle" on his JD BR show tractor. With the skip firing Deere 2 cylinder Deere he is able to create all sorts of weird barks and whistles with it. Lotsa fun at parades and shows!!

Yup - - exhaust whistles (not to be confused with steam whistles) were available years ago. Used to show up on tractors that replaced steamers, but lacked any kind of warning device. Watch E-bay. They show up frequently for $60 or so. They're not nearly as loud as a steam engine's whistle, but better than yelling over your tractor. Exhaust pressure is irratic in internal combustion engines, so whistle noise has a beat to it at the same frequencey as your engine firing. Different sizes were made for different engines. Operated by pulling a cord, which closed a by-pass valve and diverted the exaust to the whistle. Whistles were made up of 3-5 pipes, making 3-5 note cords.

Have fun..... ...

I do happen to have one, mine screws into one of the sparkplug holes, the spark plug is then screwed into the whistle. engine runs fine untill you pull the rope and then it will miss on that cylinder. It looks like a steam whistle.
Not sure if Mac"s have them but, www.macsautoparts.com will get you a free antique auto catalog.

Yes in one of my Allis books it shows one on an old 18-30 Allis tractor. I imagine they are somewhat uncommon. R Wyler

When I was just a kid I remember the older folks talking about those whistles on the model Ts and As. You might search for an early Ford website. I'd bet you can find one.
