F-20 alive and well again

Yesterday my 85 year old Dad and I just finished replacing the head, manifold and oil pump on his 36 F-20. I'm still wearing the black stuff off my hands. Never have found any hand cleaner that gets it out of the cracks and crevices in your skin.
It was his first tractor. He kept it and farmed with it all of his life. He tells quite a story about how it replaced some of the teams of horses then moved over the years from the "BIG" tractor to life under an old DU-ALL loader during his farming times. I spent my share of time on thet steel seat sweeping hay mid 60's and early 70's.
IT was a real joy to have him there when we gave it a crank and it raored back to life. We had started to restore it last summer, thought it really only needed cleaning and paint, read that lots and lots of cleaning 70 years of grease, until the water started to show up in the oil. All in all, this was one great time. Hope everyone has the chance to relive some of those special times with someone like Dad. Sounds kinda corney, but as we worked, cussed the rusty bolts and used the tools and old service books that his Dad had used it seemed like Grandpa was right there too.
The old girl will sit out the winter in the shed with the Super M-TA, 41 M(now the loader tractor) and the 48 C. All of these tractors helped Dad make a living and raise up 4 kids on the old Nebraska Homestead. Now they keep the farmyards looking great, move snow and help me keep my sanity after a week in the office.

Thanks everyone for the help with head torque settings etc.

Love to hear these stories. Reminds me of listening to all of the old farmers and relatives I grew up listening to. Sometime this spring I hope I can get my F-20 finished and hear her run. You all be safe playing with your old iron and be sure to get your tetanus shot for the winter.

Bill,
Great Story! Several years a go, my Dad I I got his 36 F-20 running, too. The farmed near Greenwood, Nebraska. Where is your Dad from?

My Grandpa's first tractor was a '36 F-20. They bought it in '37 for $1500.00 with all of the implements. He had a good pair of mules and was offered $800.00 for them that year but was afraid to sell them until he knew the tractor was going to work out O.K. He sold the mules the following year but could not get $800.00 for them. I asked him one time if $1500.00 was a lot of money in 1937 - he most assuredly informed me that it was. I don't remember the F-20, he had an H and a 300U when I was little. He traded them both for a 656 in 1966 or 67. My cousin still uses the 656 on his farm.

Hey Bill,

Nice heartwarming spin there.

You're a good 'un (but that goes unsaid, especially since you're from Gering!). I live right up the road from ya.

Thanks for the read,

Allan
