My buddy came by and welded another bolt onto the one on my fan pulley's set screw...we got er loose and then got good tension on the belt.
While he was doin that I flushed the radiator out real good and we put er all back together....she is still pumpin (cold) antifreeze out the overflow once it heats up. His thoughts are either that the water pump ain't suckin enough (impeller blades maybe worn)or a head gasket is pumpin too much air in to the system to let the coolant in. Heck I don't know....any thoughts? What should we tear apart first? Thanks in advance.

other postings could very well be right.another thought is it may be a defective dadiator cap.if you can see water circulating with the engine running it should rule out the water pump.you ca also put a pressure terter on the radiator and see what kind of pressure it builds.be careful not to let it build too much over radiator cap rating.hope it helps

Forgot to mention that this is an H and a non pressure radiator. Seems like an odd mix as I though the non pressure radiators were for thermal siphon tractors....and this being a 51 I would think it is well past the thermal siphon days....the original and second owners swear that no extensive mods done to this tractor such as engine swap, etc.

Maybe I have a one of a kind! LOL.

I am not clear on how to air test the motor with 10 psi...could someone enlighten me?

Mornin' Brian,

You could run a cylinder pressure test.

Make yourself an adaptor out of an old spark plug. Waller out the guts an braze an air fitting on it.

Hook up your air compressor to each cylinder making sure it is on the compression stroke so that both valves are closed.

Then, go see if your getting any air in the radiator. If you are, you're gonna be busy for a few days. :>)

Sounds like you are over filling it. Run it till warm with the cap off, let it push out what is to much. Then put the cap back on and run it if it doesn't over heat then run it that way. If it does over heat then you may have a water pump/head gasket problem. Most old tractors run with the water level about 1-2 inchs below the top of the rad

Brian.....a couple of thoughts. Liquid expands when it gets hot. If you fill it up to the top of the tank, it will overflow. Modern vehicles have a recovery system....in the old days, it was something done to cars in the 60's.

My little Ford 2N drove me nuts til I just let it find the level it needed, which is quite a ways down the tank. I knew better when I filled the BN, to not fill it to the brim.

I'd get a hand held thermometer, and see how hot she gets on the outside. My guess is that with all you are doing, you are fine.

Take Care
Steve

I would air test it . go to autozone and rent tester and put 10 pounds on the system and see if it leaks off. will rule out head gasket. good luck.
