686,

'Bout yours? Got a shot so I can see if I'm doing things right? I'm assuming from your handle that you have a 686?

I've never seen an orignal and am wondering about that auxrillary battery. What kind of a cover and hold-downs did they originally use? Also, mine has a darned 1 1/2" hole in the right dash lower panel; what goes in there? An air filter gauge?

Onwards and upwards as they say. :>)

On my 686 there is just a tin plug in that hole in the dash. I've never seen any kind of gauge in that hole on other 686's, maybe someone else will know. On the auxrillary battery there is just two long hook bolts and a peice of angle iron holding the battery down to the platform. I've no idea what the factory setup was, maybe someone has a parts book. Does your 686 have a turn signal switch box mounted to the dash under the steering wheel? Sure makes a good knee banger.

Hi Scott,

Yes, it has that turn signal switch and the regular lights/switch are tied into it having the four-ways working when the lights are on the "low-beam" position.

I've never gotten used to it; either the turn signals or the four ways..... :>)

Allan: I've never paid much attention to the 666 and 686 on location and cover for second battery. I hear guys talking about it being located by rear fender, which side I don't know? My 656 had the second battery on the right just under fuel tank and just behind clutch housing. It had a plastic cover over that battery.

One thing I found with the 656 is you couldn't get a large enough battery either place, for good performance. I changed the whole setup, built battery boxes either side of clutch housing, large enough to double the cranking amps. It made for very short cables, and it also made the tractor start one heck of a lot better in cold weather. The factory setup may have worked fine in the deep south. Reality is I had to deal with winter.

Jim: I don't remember the exact cranking amps, had the same setup on 560 and 656. Two 6 volt batteries in series, they were each about 15" to 18" long 8" wide and about 9" or 10" deep. I used 1 gauge cables, and that ended 282 diesel atarting problems. As I recall I got about 10 years out of batteries with that setup. I had the same battery single in 300.

Hugh, I have never paid any att. to any of the 6"s, but my 460 had two 6 volts under the hood on front of the steering wheel. We had trouble starting it for several years. We built a box on the side frame and used two 12 volts. After we had the starter overhauled did away with one batt and use one heavy duty 12.
