Super A fuel leak

I have been going thru a lot of petrol lately, I have noticed a small but steady dripping from the strainer bowl. Even if I shut the fuel valve off, the rate of the leak seems to stay steady. Here's a stupid question, if I tighten the fuel cut-off, can I safely remove the strainer bowl and replace the gasket? Could it be any other problem? The tank will soon be empty anyway, so fuel spill may not become an issue. Thanks for all the advice, I ask a lot of question on here and have learned a lot.

Hi Bill. Yes, your fuel shutoff should enable you to remove and clean the strainer bowl or replace the gasket Hugh is talking about.

Bill: It sounds as though you have the same problem with your Super A as I am having. Mine started leaking just lately, actually leaks worse when fuel is turned off. I suspect the stem that turns must be worn, as fuel comes out around that stem. I actually got mine stopped leaking when shut off is open. Now I just have to find the complete assembly I bought two years ago to have on hand in case this happened. I am great at buying parts like this in advance, putting them away in a safe place, then forgetting where that safe place is. You can, or at least you could buy that complete assembly from CaseIH two years ago.

I had this happen on another IH tractor once, and found only cure was complete new assembly that screws into tank. My experience has been replace the whole assembly unless it's just rubber gasket for bowl.

The gasket around the bowl can also give trouble, but shut off will cure that one. The new ones are a flat rubber ring.

Thanks to all as usual for the good advice. I am concerned that if the shut-off is worn, if I try to remove the fuel strainer, I'll have gasoline all over the place. I'd hate to have to remove the tank, my first step is to replace the gasket and see what that does. Thanks again.

Hugh, I bought a complete new assembly for an H from my local Case-IH dealer just this summer. It looks just like the original. If I remember the price was just under $20. For 20 bucks I am not going to fight trying to repair the old one.

Agreeing with Rusty. My IH-Case shop tried to sell me a strainer/fuel cutoff assembly for a 240 recently and the price was under $30. I didn't buy it because so far it seems to be functional and holding "reasonably" well and I sorely did not want to have to do a tank yank. But I was glad to know he still had compatible parts in stock.
